Poor teeth, a common problem in many older horses, will result in decreased feed intake and weight loss, particularly in horses on an all-forage diet. The number one killer of horses is colic from impaction, due to poor gastrointestinal activity. Horses can only synthesize 10 of the 22 amino acids that constitute body proteins. The 12 that cannot be synthesized are called essential amino acids. These essential amino acids cannot be made by horses so they must be provided through diet.
