Estrogen and progesterone affect hundreds of sites in your body!

Hormones are tiny messengers sent all over the body to stimulate certain activities.

Estrogen is not one hormone, it is the name of a group of hormones. Estrogen relieves many menopausal symptoms and is thought to prevent osteoporosis and heart disease.

Phytoestrogens are a group of compounds which are not hormones but occupy estrogen receptors in the body and offer protection against xeno-estrogens in the body.

Xeno-Estrogens are synthetic compounds that occur as a result of petrochemical industries and environmental pollution. When ingested or exposed to our bodies, they act like estrogen and can cause the same negative effects such as the unopposed synthetic estrogen.

Progesterone is the master 'starter' hormone from which the other great steroid hormones are made, i.e., testosterone, estrogens, and the adrenal corticosteroids. Progesterone is made by the ovaries prior to menopause and by the adrenal glands and fat cells after menopause. It is the single most important hormone in the female body. Progesterone protects against endometrial cell abnormalities and also builds bone.

Progestin/Progestogens is the synthetic form of progesterone, but with a different chemical structure and causing different actions and effects in the body.

Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT) is a medical treatment in which a woman's estrogen level is artificially increased, restoring premenopausal levels on a short- or long-term basis. It is believed that a woman can safely take estrogen "unopposed," that is, without the addition of progestin, if she has had her uterus removed.1

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) refers to a treatment that combines both estrogen and a progestin, a form of the hormone progesterone.

Here are a few of the different functions of estrogen and progesterone:

Estrogen Effects Progesterone Effects
Increases risk of prostate cancerHelps prevent prostate cancer
Increases risk of breast cancerHelps prevent breast cancer
Increases body fat Helps use fat for energy
Increases blood clottingNormalizes blood clotting
Increases salt & fluid retentionActs as natural diuretic
Increases risk of autoimmune disordersFunctions as precursor of corticosteroids
Causes breast stimulation (to grow)Protects against fibrocystic breasts
Interferes with thyroid hormoneFacilitates thyroid hormone action
Increases risk of endometrial cancerPrevents endometrial cancer
Decreases sex driveRestores sex drive
Impairs blood sugar controlNormalizes blood sugar levels
Reduces oxygen levels in all cellsRestores proper cell oxygen levels
Creates progesterone receptorsIncreases sensitivity of estrogen receptors
Slightly restrains osteoclast functionStimulates osteoblast bone building

Reasons we need to understand estrogen and progesterone:

Menopause
(By 2025 the number of postmenopausal women is expected to rise to 1.1 billion)

Cardiovascular Disease
(Leading cause of death among American women)

Endometriosis
(Affects 5 1/2 million women and girls in the USA and Canada, and millions more worldwide)

Osteoporosis
(15 to 20 million people affected)

Breast Cancer
(A woman will die from breast cancer every 13 minutes)

Fibroid Tumors
(Largest recorded fibroid weighed 140 pounds)

Adrenal glands make progesterone for women and men both; but women depend on their ovaries for the main supply of progesterone (also estrogen). When at menopause the ovary's output of both drastically drops (but doesn't cease), the adrenal glands try harder but don't make up the difference.2

  • Estrogen levels drop only 40-60% at menopause, which is just enough to stop the menstrual cycle

  • Progesterone levels may drop to near zero in some women.

The term "estrogen dominance," is used to describe what happens when the normal ratio or balance of estrogen to progesterone is changed by excess estrogen or inadequate progesterone.

Estrogen dominance is known to cause and/or contribute to cancer of the breast (as much as a 30% increase), ovary, endometrium (uterus), and prostate.

Estrogen is a potent and potentially dangerous hormone when not balanced by adequate NATURAL progesterone.

    Estrogen/progestin therapy also resulted in:
    41% increase in strokes
    29% increase in heart attacks
Doubled rates of blood clots in legs and lungs
    37% less colorectal cancer
34% fewer hip fractures and 24% less total fractures 3

Estrogen dominance is usually associated with PMS and menopause.
    Symptoms of estrogen dominance:
Weight gain, bloating, mood swings, irritability, tender breasts, headaches, fatigue, depression, hypoglycemia, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and fibrocystic breasts.

Progestin (such as provera) occupies progesterone receptor sites in tissues, taking over for the true hormone but not capable of doing most of its jobs.

Progesterone has been shown to be beneficial for men as well as women.

  • Progesterone will actively increase bone mass and density and can reverse osteoporosis.4

  • Progesterone has been shown to both oppose the actions of estrogen and may inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

  • In aging men, the increasing estrogen/testosterone ratio and the insignificant levels of progesterone are now thought to be the dominant factors promoting prostate enlargement. Progesterone replacement by men over 55 could help prevent these conditions which are endemic to the aged male.

  • Topically applied natural progesterone can remove fine lines and provide underlying firmness to aging skin. Both men and women should consider applying progesterone cream to the face several times a week for additional anti-aging benefits.6

  • Women who still have their uterus can also take progesterone, which has other health benefits. (*See Chart Above)

  • **Many women now taking estrogen or estrogen combined with progestins are able to discontinue their HRT.
Please consult with a medical professional before doing so. It is possible that if adequate natural progesterone levels were present, any needed estrogen could be made from it.
Because progesterone sensitizes estrogen receptors, it makes sense to supplement with progesterone rather than estrogen. If you are taking hormone replacements and begin applying progesterone cream and do not lower your estrogen dosage, you may experience symptoms of estrogen-dominance, so with your doctor's permission, lower your estrogen dose.
Continue replacing your HRT with progesterone and after a while you will have discontinued your HRT.**

Little benefit can be derived by women taking birth control pills. These pills work by suppressing normal hormones.5
