Most of us are quite familiar with this beautiful poem turned into
song.
Most of us are all too familiar with the phrase "going the extra
mile."
Since it is healthy to do self-examinations, how about a mental
"check-up?"
When was the last time you went the extra mile with your loved
ones, your friends, your business associates? Last week, I found myself in a
very peculiar situation. It was imperative that I contact a particular business
that we hire to give us a service. However, much to my dismay, when placing the
call, I was thrown into what seemed like a calling maize. After holding on the
phone for a full 27 minutes, and then having my call answered only to be
re-routed to another agent, I was feeling the pressure of other pressing matters
that certainly needed my immediate attention. I won’t bore you with the tedious
details, but I will state that the entire matter was still being worked on after
a full 83 minutes on the phone. This triggered my mind, and I began to think
back to the "good old days" when service was considered to be an
honor.
What has happened to service? I’m sure that all of you have
experienced like circumstances and the temptation to become frustrated and
unload our frustrations upon the representative who is trying to help us. Rather
than do this, however, I’d like to challenge each of us to instead, take a quick
survey of our own attitudes towards serving others.
We often mention great leaders in this format. Leaders such as
Sam Walton, who placed service above and beyond any bottom line or profit. In
this generation it is still a fact that those who serve, live longer, healthier,
happier and more fulfilling lives.
Those of us who still recognize the beauty of giving and not just
seeing what we can get out of life, need to be examples every day, teaching by
our attitudes and our conduct.
